LAWS PROTECTING CAFOS

There is limited transparency when it comes to the public's awareness of these operations, making change and regulation difficult. It is important that citizens know the laws in their own state and county to be effective advocates.

RIGHT TO FARM

See your state's Right to Farm laws that prevent citizens from filing nuisance lawsuits against agricultural operations in their community. The film "Right to Harm" documents stories from rural towns who are impacted by these laws.

"AG-GAG" LAWS

Ag Gag laws were passed to prevent anyone from entering an animal agriculture/livestock facility and taking videos or pictures. These laws vary state to state and are ultimately designed to prevent undercover operations that would lead to the public seeing how their food is made.

DATA GAPS

The NRDC began working with the EPA to gather information on CAFOs but were blocked by industry. A series of court decisions were made that ultimately lead to any future requests of public information about CAFOs from being released. See the NRDC report titled "CAFOs: What We Don't Know is Hurting Us" for what they found.
